Pilar de la Horadada is the southernmost town of the Costa Blanca, right on the border with the Region of Murcia. Unlike the purpose-built resorts to the north, it is a real Spanish working town with a busy centre, schools, a health centre and year-round life, plus its own stretch of coast at Torre de la Horadada and Mil Palmeras a few minutes away. Property for sale in Pilar de la Horadada covers everything from town-centre apartments and terraced houses to beachside homes and golf villas at Lo Romero, often at lower prices than comparable homes in Orihuela Costa. It also has the shortest drive to Región de Murcia airport of any Costa Blanca town.

A town of its own since 1986: the Pilar de la Horadada story
Pilar de la Horadada was part of the municipality of Orihuela until 1986, when it became an independent town. It takes its name from the Virgen del Pilar, whose festivities in October are the highlight of the local calendar, and from the Torre de la Horadada, a 16th-century coastal watchtower built to warn of pirate raids, which still stands above the sea in the coastal village of the same name.
Agriculture shaped the area, and the town is still surrounded by irrigated farmland and citrus and vegetable fields. That gives Pilar a more authentically Spanish feel than much of the coast: local bars, family-run shops and a weekly market alongside a growing international community.
Where to buy: town centre, Torre de la Horadada, Mil Palmeras and Pinar de Campoverde
- Town centre: apartments and terraced townhouses within walking distance of shops, schools, the health centre and the church square. The most affordable option and ideal for year-round living; the beach is about 3–4 km away.
- Torre de la Horadada: the former fishing village on the coast, with its watchtower, small marina, beaches and a relaxed, very Spanish summer atmosphere. Mostly apartments and townhouses.
- Mil Palmeras: the beach resort to the north, with a long sandy beach and many new-build apartments.
- Pinar de Campoverde: an inland urbanisation set among pine woods west of the town, with detached villas on larger plots and a quieter, greener setting.
- Lo Romero: modern apartments and townhouses around the Lo Romero golf course.

Pilar de la Horadada's beaches, from Torre de la Horadada to Mil Palmeras
The municipality's coastline runs from Mil Palmeras in the north to the Murcia border in the south. Alongside the long sandy beach at Mil Palmeras there are smaller beaches and coves around Torre de la Horadada, such as Las Higuericas, El Conde and Jesuitas, many of which have held Blue Flag status. The small marina at Torre de la Horadada is home to a sailing club and a handful of seafood restaurants.
Just across the border, the Mar Menor lagoon at San Pedro del Pinatar offers warm, calm water and the Salinas de San Pedro regional park, with its salt pans, dunes and flamingos, about 10–15 minutes from the town.
Lo Romero golf and outdoor life
Lo Romero Golf, an 18-hole course on the edge of the town, is known for its well-kept layout and views of the surrounding countryside, and has helped attract golf buyers who want lower prices than in the Orihuela Costa golf resorts. Campoamor, Las Ramblas and Villamartín courses are around 15–20 minutes away.
Beyond golf, the flat terrain between the town and the sea is popular with cyclists, and the Pinar de Campoverde pine woods offer shade for walks in summer. The town has sports facilities, including a municipal sports centre and a public swimming pool.
Airports, AP-7 and services for residents
Pilar de la Horadada is the closest Costa Blanca town to Región de Murcia International Airport at Corvera, approximately 35 km or 25–30 minutes by car. Alicante–Elche airport is approximately 70 km, around 55–60 minutes via the AP-7. The AP-7 and N-332 both pass the town, giving easy access to Torrevieja, Cartagena and Murcia.
Everyday services are all in the town: supermarkets, banks, pharmacies, state schools, the health centre and the town hall. The nearest public hospital for Pilar residents is in Torrevieja, around 25 minutes away, and there are private clinics in the area.
Renting and living year-round in Pilar de la Horadada
Because Pilar is a real town, the long-term rental market is active all year, with demand from local families, agricultural and service workers and foreign residents. Two-bedroom apartments rent for approximately €600–€1,000 per month, higher at the coast. Holiday lets perform best at Mil Palmeras and Torre de la Horadada in July and August; they need Valencian tourist-dwelling registration, the national rental registration number required since July 2025 and, in community buildings, the community's approval since April 2025.
For buyers who want to live in Spain rather than just holiday here, Pilar offers a good balance: Spanish life, schools and services on the doorstep, beaches 5–10 minutes away and prices below the southern Orihuela Costa. Compare with San Miguel de Salinas if you are weighing up inland towns.
