Guardamar del Segura is the northern gateway to the Vega Baja: a genuine Spanish town where the River Segura meets the sea, backed by one of the most remarkable coastal pine forests in Spain. Its long, natural sandy beaches, walkable town centre and short drive to Alicante airport make it one of the most balanced places to buy on the southern Costa Blanca. Guardamar's defining feature is its dune pine forest. At the start of the 20th century, shifting sand dunes were burying parts of the town, and a reforestation project led by the forestry engineer Francisco Mira planted pines, palms and eucalyptus to fix them. The result is a vast coastal forest running behind the beach, crossed by shaded paths, with the town parks of Parque Alfonso XIII and Parque Reina Sofía on its edge.

In front of the forest lie roughly 11 km of open, natural sandy beaches, from Playa Centro and La Roqueta near the town to El Moncayo, Babilonia and Els Tossals. Several hold the Blue Flag most years. Unlike many resorts, there is no wall of high-rise blocks along the sand: the dunes and pines are protected, which is a large part of Guardamar's appeal.
